Important Onslow Medical Centre Updates for 2026

These current clinic notices affect booking, reminders, prescription planning and service expectations.

WhatsApp appointment reminders

The clinic now sends appointment reminders through WhatsApp when possible. Patients without WhatsApp should still receive an SMS.

Standard appointments are 15 minutes

Most consultation fees cover up to 15 minutes. Longer or multi-issue visits may attract an extended consultation fee.

Book double time for three or more issues

The clinic asks patients with three or more concerns to request a double appointment.

Some prescriptions may last up to 12 months

From February 2026, some stable patients may be eligible after a GP review. It is not automatic or suitable for every medicine.

Adult ADHD diagnosis is not offered

The clinic states that it does not diagnose adult ADHD or begin ADHD medicines, but a GP can discuss referral to an external provider.

Payment is due at consultation

The clinic asks patients to pay at the time of the appointment and publishes missed-appointment charges.

How to Book the Correct Onslow Appointment

Use Manage My Health

A straightforward routine GP booking when the correct clinician and appointment type are available.

Phone reception

Urgent concern, first appointment, several issues, double visit, medical examination, procedure or vaccination.

Use after-hours care

A problem cannot safely wait until Onslow reopens but is not a life-threatening emergency.

What you need Best route What to prepare
One routine health concern Manage My Health or phone Main concern, medicine list and preferred doctor.
Three or more issues Phone for a double appointment A prioritised list of the most important concerns.
First appointment after enrolment Phone reception Photo ID, medicines, previous practice and health history.
Another family member also needs care Book a separate appointment Correct patient name, date of birth and reason for visit.
Medical examination Phone reception Required form, photo ID and purpose of the examination.
Procedure, vaccination or special test Phone reception Service name, previous assessment and fee questions.
Reception phone script

“Kia ora, I need an appointment for ____. I have one concern / several concerns / a medical form / a procedure request. Which booking type do I need, how long should I allow, what will it cost, and what should I bring?”

Cancellation rules: current page versus older PDF

The current fees page refers to at least two hours’ notice before a missed-appointment charge may apply. An older Manage My Health PDF refers to 24 hours for online appointments.

Safest action: cancel as early as possible, preferably at least 24 hours ahead. Phone reception when the portal does not show a cancellation option.

How to Enrol as a New Patient

Onslow Medical Centre and Healthpoint currently state that the practice is accepting eligible new patients.

Check eligibility

Confirm that you qualify for publicly funded healthcare in New Zealand.

Complete enrolment

Use the clinic’s official online enrolment route.

Provide evidence

Supply photo ID and funding-eligibility documents when required.

Book the first visit

Wait for confirmation, then phone reception.

Information the form requests

  • Full legal and preferred name.
  • Date and country of birth.
  • Residential and postal address.
  • Phone, email and emergency contact.
  • Ethnicity and smoking status.
  • Previous general practice.
  • Text and Manage My Health consent.

Your first appointment

  • Wait for the enrolment confirmation email.
  • The first visit cannot be booked online.
  • Phone reception on 04 478 9999.
  • A 15-minute nurse appointment is listed at no charge.
  • A 30-minute new-patient doctor appointment follows.
  • The doctor appointment is charged as a double consultation.

Who signs the enrolment form?

The current enrolment PDF says patients aged over 16 must complete their own form. A parent or caregiver can sign for a child under 16. A person signing for somebody else must have appropriate authority.

Eligibility evidence

New Zealand citizens may be asked to show proof. Non-citizens may need to provide a passport, visa and evidence that the relevant publicly funded healthcare eligibility rule applies.

Medical-record transfer and privacy

The enrolment form asks whether the practice may obtain records from the previous doctor. It also explains that relevant information may be shared with the PHO, authorised health providers and national programmes for care, funding and service planning.

Your privacy rights: the enrolment document states that you may request access to and correction of your health information. It also explains the electronic Shared Care Record and the option to discuss opting out with the practice.

Current GP Consultation Fees

The clinic’s current fee page and Healthpoint publish the following enrolled-patient fees. Confirm the amount before attending because eligibility, appointment duration and additional services can affect the total.

Manage My Health Appointments, Results and Messages

Suitable portal tasks

  • Book a suitable routine appointment.
  • View available laboratory results.
  • Read the doctor’s result comments.
  • Request an established long-term medicine.
  • Send a non-urgent secure message.
  • Report incorrect health-summary information.

Important portal limits

  • Do not send urgent or serious symptoms.
  • Messages may take up to 48 business hours.
  • Not every clinician answers email requests.
  • Complex messages may require an appointment.
  • A complex email consultation may carry a fee.
  • Use a private email address for your account.

How test results appear

The clinic’s portal document says an email may notify you when the record is updated. Results can appear under the health-summary area with a doctor’s comment. Read the comment and complete any recommended follow-up.

Do not assume every abnormal result will wait for the portal. The document says the clinic may also use phone or letter when follow-up is required.

Repeat Prescriptions, 48-Hour Timing and 12-Month Scripts

Choose the medicine

Request a medicine previously issued by the practice.

Provide patient details

Include name, date of birth, doctor and phone number.

Name the pharmacy

Provide the pharmacy receiving the electronic prescription.

Allow processing time

Standard requests are listed as ready within 48 hours.

Information to provide

  • Full patient name.
  • Date of birth.
  • Usual doctor.
  • Contact phone number.
  • Medicine name, strength and dose.
  • Preferred pharmacy.

Why a review may be required

  • The medicine has not been issued before.
  • A health review is overdue.
  • Monitoring tests are due.
  • The dose or symptoms have changed.
  • The medicine requires closer supervision.
  • A longer prescription is not clinically suitable.

Can you receive a 12-month prescription?

Some patients with stable long-term conditions may be eligible for prescriptions lasting up to 12 months. The clinic says patients should book a GP review when the next repeat is due so the doctor can decide whether this is safe.

Not automatic: medicine type, condition stability, required monitoring, side effects and overall health determine whether a longer prescription is appropriate.
Urgent medicine problem: phone the clinic while open, call Healthline when unsure, or call 111 for a critical emergency. The portal is not an emergency service.

GP, Nursing, Screening and Procedure Services

General, family, child and adolescent care

The clinic provides routine primary care, long-term-condition reviews, health screening and injury assessment.

  • Request a double appointment for three or more concerns.
  • Book each family member separately.

Healthpoint lists pregnancy, childhood, age-based, influenza, MMR, meningococcal and other immunisation services.

  • Phone to check vaccine availability and funding.

Cervical screening and reproductive health

Cervical screening may involve a self-taken or assisted HPV swab, or a clinician-collected cervical sample.

  • Ask which option is suitable for you.
  • Confirm funding and nurse charges.
  • Phone for LARC, contraception or procedure bookings.
ECG, lung-function and hearing tests

The fee page lists separate charges for ECG, lung-function and hearing tests.

  • Spirometry may take about 15–30 minutes.
  • Ask whether inhalers or medicine affect preparation.
  • Confirm whether a separate GP consultation is needed.
Minor surgery, liquid nitrogen and vasectomy

The clinic lists minor surgery, liquid-nitrogen treatment and vasectomy services.

  • Book an assessment before expecting same-day treatment.
  • Ask about materials, pathology and follow-up costs.

Travel health and vaccines

Travel consultations can cover destination risk, vaccines, malaria prevention and existing medical conditions.

  • Provide all destinations and departure dates.
  • Bring vaccine records and medicine information.
  • Book early enough for multi-dose courses.
Mental wellbeing and referral support

Healthpoint lists wellbeing support that may involve GPs, nurses, Health Improvement Practitioners, Health Coaches or Support Workers.

  • Tell reception when extra appointment time may be needed.
  • Ask whether a wellbeing team member is suitable.
  • The clinic does not currently diagnose adult ADHD or start ADHD medication.
Allergy management and testing

The family-health page lists assessment for hay fever, asthma, eczema, food allergy, urticaria and anaphylaxis, including skin-prick testing and immunotherapy in suitable cases.

  • Enrolled patients can book an appointment.
  • Externally referred patients should request a 30-minute appointment.
  • Bring referral information and a medicine list.

Driver, Maritime, Insurance and Workplace Medicals

The practice provides several certification and occupational medical examinations. Tell reception the exact purpose because form, test and appointment requirements differ.

Medical type Bring Booking tip
Driver licence medical Photo ID, licence details, glasses, hearing aids and required forms. Say whether it is heavy-vehicle or age-related.
Maritime seafarer medical Maritime forms, photo ID and requested medical information. Confirm tests, nurse time and total fee.
Insurance medical Insurer paperwork, identification and test instructions. Reports or tests may require additional time.
Pre-employment or workplace medical Employer forms, role requirements and identification. Tell reception which tests the employer requires.
Scuba-diving medical Dive organisation form, medical history and identification. Do not use a standard short online appointment.
Outward Bound medical Programme form and relevant health information. Mention the completion deadline.
Save a return trip: send or describe the form before attending so reception can allocate enough doctor and nurse time.
